The Borno State Police Command has successfully rearrested Abubakar Mohammed, a 27-year-old inmate who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Center in Maiduguri while serving a sentence for culpable homicide. The escape occurred after a section of the prison’s fence collapsed due to severe flooding in the area.
According to a statement from the police, released on Tuesday by spokesperson Ahmed Wakil, the incident took place on September 15, 2024, around 3:00 p.m. A vigilant resident of Bulakara Ward in Gubio Local Government Area recognized Mohammed in Gubio town and promptly notified the authorities. Responding quickly to the information, a police patrol team apprehended the fugitive without incident.
Abubakar Mohammed is now set to be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service. The police command has also indicated that they are actively working to locate other individuals who escaped during the flood-related incident.
