The Nigerian Military has released Seaman Abbas Haruna, who had reportedly been detained for nearly six years. His release was made possible after the Nigerian Navy authorities approved certain decisions regarding his case.
On Friday, Haruna and his wife appeared on a prominent radio station in Abuja, where they confirmed his freedom from incarceration. During the interview, they shared their harrowing experiences stemming from his detention, noting that they had been expelled from their barracks amid the turmoil surrounding Haruna’s case.
Haruna’s wife expressed her unwavering support, stating, “I will be with him no matter the situation. They have discharged him. He was ejected from the barracks. I love my husband. I love him.”
A senior officer at the Naval headquarters revealed to our reporter that Haruna had been dismissed from the Nigerian Navy, indicating that he is no longer part of the armed forces. When asked about the couple’s claims regarding their eviction from the barracks, the officer chose not to comment.
Attempts to obtain an official response regarding these allegations were unsuccessful, as calls to the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, went unanswered. A text message sent to him had not received a reply by the time this report was published.
Previously, Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliya, had accused the military of unjustly detaining her husband since 2018 during a radio program. In response, the Defence Headquarters asserted that Haruna had never been arrested. However, a video surfaced showing Haruna actively resisting disarmament by military personnel, followed by gunfire.
Iliya has accused Brig. Gen. A.S. Adamu of orchestrating her husband’s detention and torture. Her allegations gained significant attention, leading Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle to initiate an investigation into the matter.
