A Lagos resident has expressed deep frustration over the economic hardship and lack of access to petroleum, despite supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections by engaging in aggressive tactics, including assaulting elderly individuals.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man recounted how, despite his efforts to ensure Tinubu’s presidency, he now faces worsening living conditions. “We wanted to buy fuel, but we couldn’t get any. They even beat us at the fuel station. I was part of those who beat people at Idi-Oro,” he admitted.

The resident went on to describe how he and others went door-to-door, urging people to vote for Tinubu, only to be disappointed by the economic outcome. “You became President, but now you’re destroying our lives. It’s becoming impossible for us to find food to eat,” he lamented.

He also pointed out that various government agencies in Lagos continue to burden citizens with taxes despite the difficult economic environment. “We are suffering in Nigeria, even in our fatherland. We’re drivers, and that’s how we make a living. LASTMA and VIO are always collecting money from us. Please, Tinubu, do something about this hardship.”

Reflecting on his past actions, he expressed regret for his involvement in violent efforts to secure Tinubu’s victory. “We are the same people who beat others so you could become President. Some of the people we attacked were as old as our fathers, but we did it for you, chanting that it was our turn. And now look at us—suffering. We can’t even afford rice. I spent N1200 on food today, and my kids haven’t eaten.”

The man also voiced concerns about potential repercussions for speaking out. “I know for sure that after what I’ve said, they’ll still come and beat me at home,” he said

This outcry comes amid nationwide complaints about the sharp increase in fuel prices, with some parts of the country seeing prices as high as N1000 per litre. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has also been selling fuel for up to N855 per litre.
