The security situation around the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has taken a troubling turn, with reports of suspected kidnappers laying ambushes near the university’s main gate. This comes amid a backdrop of past criminal activities, including frequent robberies and kidnappings along the Obinze-Ihiagwa Road, which runs close to the campus.
While security operatives have previously arrested kidnappers in the forested areas surrounding the university, the threat has resurfaced, with recent reports indicating that the criminals are now operating closer to the institution’s main entrance. The alarming resurgence of these activities was highlighted in a notification issued by the university management, urging students and staff to exercise extreme caution.
According to the warning, these incidents often occur early in the morning and late in the evening, making those traveling during these hours particularly vulnerable. The security alert, issued by the Office of the Registrar, expressed concern over the frequency of kidnappings on the Obinze-Ihiagwa Road, urging everyone within the university community to remain cautious.
“Management of the University has noted recent kidnapping incidents on the Obinze-Ihiagwa Road, very close to the University Main Gate,” the statement read. “These incidents are reported to happen early in the morning and late in the evening.”
To ensure the safety of students and staff, FUTO management has advised against unnecessary movements during high-risk hours. The university specifically instructed students to avoid leaving or entering the campus between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to minimize the risk of encountering these criminals.
Additionally, students were urged to remain vigilant and keep their families informed of their whereabouts at all times. “Students are also enjoined to be vigilant and inform their parents, guardians, or any significant others of their movements,” the statement further advised.
