On Saturday, the Israeli military confirmed that its airstrike in Beirut resulted in the death of Hassan Nasrallah, who had led the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah for over thirty years. This airstrike on Friday marked the latest in a series of attacks targeting key figures within Hezbollah, which has been involved in cross-border rocket and drone strikes into Israel for nearly a year.
According to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Nasrallah was killed alongside Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, as well as other high-ranking commanders. The strike took place at a command facility located beneath a residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area historically known as a Hezbollah stronghold.
The IDF reported that the operation occurred while senior members of Hezbollah’s leadership were present, actively planning further attacks against Israel. The Friday airstrikes resulted in significant damage, leveling several high-rise buildings in Beirut, marking the largest explosions in the city since Hezbollah began launching attacks on Israel following the escalation of conflict on October 8, 2023, in response to Israeli military actions in Gaza.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported at least six fatalities and 91 injuries from the strikes, with concerns that the death toll could increase as rescue efforts continue to uncover those trapped under debris.
