Iran has detained at least 12 individuals accused of collaborating with Israel and plotting actions that threaten the nation’s security.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday that these arrests occurred across six provinces in Iran, although they did not disclose the specific date of the operations, according to a report by Reuters.
The IRGC described these arrests as part of a broader initiative aimed at combating foreign interference, particularly from Israel. The organization claims that Israel is attempting to instigate turmoil in Iran due to its inability to achieve its larger strategic objectives in the region.
The IRGC’s statement read: “As the Zionist regime and its Western allies, particularly the United States, have failed in their malicious plans against the people of Gaza and Lebanon, they are now attempting to export the crisis to Iran through a series of plots against our national security.”
This development comes on the heels of the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last July, a killing that Iranian officials have attributed to Israeli operatives, though Israel has not acknowledged any involvement.
Recent tensions in the region have heightened, particularly following an attack that targeted communication equipment used by Hezbollah, which is widely believed to have been orchestrated by Israel.
This incident has coincided with increased military exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict.
