In a recent decision that raises eyebrows, Governor Aiyedatiwa appears to be prioritizing political advantage over the welfare of the people and the financial health of the state. This latest move, which many see as a misguided allocation of resources, places “campaign interests” above the needs of the public.

The appointments of various Special Senior Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) seem to reflect a disregard for genuine governance. These additions to the Governor’s Cabinet resemble nothing more than a collection of “ashes and cigarette butts,” indicative of empty political gestures rather than meaningful contributions to the state. These appointments, touted as commendable by the Governor, sit uncomfortably next to his evident neglect of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Local Government autonomy and its disapproval of unlawfully constituted Local Government Committees.

What is truly disheartening is the absence of any individual among these appointees who would choose to reject these positions, which many see as a mere façade—political offices stripped of value and offered to what some have termed “an array of spent forces.” This only adds unnecessary strain on the state’s resources.

The history of political entitlement—exemplified by the phrase “Do you know who I am?”—shows that these individuals are likely to act in their own interests rather than the welfare of the state. Their presence during a time of economic hardship in Ondo State raises questions about the motivations driving these appointments.

It would be refreshing if just one of the over 300 appointees would rise above personal gain and demonstrate a commitment to the greater good, showcasing at least a hint of responsibility amidst such a troubling display.

If only there were still leaders with honor, the situation could be markedly different.
