A group of Ghanaian lawyers, known as Lawyers for Protest Defence, has formally contacted the Inspector General of Police seeking detailed information about the 42 citizens detained during a recent demonstration in Accra against the country’s economic challenges.
The Ghana Police Service previously announced the arrests, claiming the individuals were part of the Democracy Hub protest held on Sunday, which they deemed unlawful. The police attempted to disperse the participants who were voicing their discontent over poor governance.
In their letter, signed by Noah Admatey, the lawyers stated, “We are a collective of legal professionals committed to advising and representing protesters. Given the multiple arrests made on September 22, 2024, we kindly request the following information: a list of those detained, the police stations where they are being held, the courts they will be presented before, and the specific dates and times of their arraignment. Please inform us if you require any further assistance.”
Following the protests, the police confirmed that all 42 individuals arrested, including some of the protest leaders, would face charges in court. This statement, issued by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, alleged that the demonstrators engaged in unlawful activities such as obstructing traffic, damaging police property, and assaulting officers.
Additionally, the police announced they are searching for Oliver Barker-Vormawor, identified as a leader and convener of the protest, who is reportedly evading arrest like the others.
