The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported a major accident that occurred on Wednesday under the Ajah Bridge on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The accident involved a tipper truck, a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Armored Personnel Carrier, and a Suzuki mini bus with the registration number JJJ 257 YJ. According to Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, preliminary investigations suggest that the tipper truck’s brakes failed as it attempted a turn under the Ajah Bridge. This brake failure resulted in the truck colliding with the stationary RRS armored vehicle, which was then pushed forward into the Suzuki mini bus.

The impact of the collision left four people seriously injured, including a LASTMA officer who sustained a broken arm while on duty at the scene.

Emergency services, including personnel from LASTMA, Lagos State Traffic Police from Ajiwe Police Station, and RRS officers, were quickly dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. The injured were swiftly taken to the nearest hospital for urgent medical attention and are currently receiving treatment.

LASTMA’s management expressed deep concern over the incident and is actively monitoring the condition of the injured. They praised the prompt response of emergency services, which helped prevent the situation from escalating further. LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called on all road users, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and to strictly follow traffic regulations to avoid similar accidents. A thorough investigation into the brake failure will be conducted by the relevant authorities to determine its cause and take necessary action.

The agency also appealed to the public, especially motorists, to cooperate with traffic authorities as efforts are made to restore normal traffic flow.
