Five young men have been apprehended in Adamawa State in connection with the alleged theft of copper cables and a gas cylinder. The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command, with the suspects ranging in age from 17 to 29 years.
Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, confirmed the arrests on Thursday. He explained that the arrests were part of ongoing efforts by the police to curb criminal activities in the state.
The suspects, identified as Abdulmunini Muhammad (18), Ibrahim Ahmed (18), Mubarak Abubakar (29), Mahmud Ibrahim (18), and Isaac Jonah (17), are all residents of Malamre and Wauro Jabbe, located in Yola North Local Government Area.
According to the police, Abdulmunini Muhammad is accused of breaking into a home in his community and stealing a gas cylinder. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Ahmed is alleged to have stolen copper cables from a filling station. Ahmed reportedly admitted to burning the cables and selling the copper wires to scavengers.
In a related crime, Mubarak Abubakar, Mahmud Ibrahim, and Isaac Jonah are accused of breaking into a building at a filling station through the ceiling and stealing copper cables, which they also intended to sell to scavengers.
This incident brings to mind a recent ban on scavenging imposed by the Adamawa State Government. Last month, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri outlawed scavenging in the state, following which the state police command vowed to crack down on individuals involved in such activities.
