A fire broke out at a shop in the Itamaga Plank Market, Lagos, early Wednesday morning, according to a statement from Nosa Okunbor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The agency received distress calls and immediately dispatched its Lion Squad from the Agbowa Base to the scene.

When the team arrived at the market around 4:20 AM, they found one of the shops completely engulfed in flames. Following an investigation, LASEMA determined that the fire was caused by a power surge.

“The prompt intervention and coordinated efforts of the LRT and the Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service ensured that the fire was swiftly contained and extinguished,” the statement read.

Although the fire destroyed the shop and caused a partial loss of goods and properties, no casualties or injuries were reported. By the time this report was filed, the fire had been completely put out and the affected area secured.

LASEMA added that emergency responders have provided safety awareness to the market occupants, advising them on the proper use of electrical appliances to prevent future incidents.
