The Department of State Services (DSS) has come under fire for allegedly arresting Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a senior lecturer at Baze University, in connection with his supposed support for the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. These protests, which took place across several parts of the country from August 1 to 10, initially started as demonstrations against hunger and hardship but soon evolved into a broader movement calling for better governance.

According to LEADERSHIP, the 10-day nationwide protest was met with mixed reactions from security forces. While protesters were allowed to march peacefully in some areas, others faced crackdowns, leading to numerous arrests. Those detained were later charged with various offenses.

On Saturday, Abuja-based lawyer Barrister Deji Adeyanju revealed that Dr. Alkali, who teaches Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Baze University, was reportedly taken into custody by DSS operatives three weeks ago. He was allegedly transferred to Sokoto State for his involvement in supporting the #EndBadGovernance movement. Adeyanju added that Dr. Alkali has been held in custody ever since.

Attempts to reach the DSS for confirmation were unsuccessful, as a message sent to their hotline went unanswered. The agency currently lacks an official spokesperson.
