Thousands of residents affected by the ongoing demolition exercise in Oyo State, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, are currently staging a significant protest in Ibadan, the state capital.

Reports indicate that victims, along with leaders and members of the African Action Congress (AAC), are demanding an immediate halt to the demolitions, which have allegedly resulted in numerous deaths and left thousands homeless.

The protesters gathered at the entrance of the state government secretariat in Agodi, chanting “No more corridor” to voice their opposition to the planned construction of a corridor road that threatens their homes and livelihoods.

Last week, some of the affected individuals also took to the streets, demonstrating their anger and frustration over the demolitions. They have consistently called for an end to the state government’s actions, as highlighted by their placards during the protests.

Earlier, residents reported that the demolitions had caused fatalities and displaced over 300,000 people. This was reiterated during a press conference held last Thursday in Ibadan, where affected individuals expressed their grievances.

The demolitions are intended to clear 500 meters of land for the Ibadan Circular Roads Project, which many have criticized as excessive and inhumane.

Protesters are urging the Oyo State House of Assembly, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and other stakeholders to intervene and hold the governor accountable. They are demanding that the governor adhere to the original plans for the Circular Road without further demolitions.

Additionally, residents echoed AAC claims that the governor is acquiring land for personal developments and to benefit his associates. This collective statement came from residents across six out of the eleven local government areas in Ibadan.
