The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has shared the details of his recent arrest and subsequent questioning following his release from a 15-hour detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). Ajaero was detained on Monday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as he prepared to board a flight to the United Kingdom for a Trade Union Congress (TUC) event.

In a recent interview, Ajaero disclosed that he was interrogated about an alleged involvement in terrorism financing, which reportedly linked him to a British national, Andrew Wynne. During his time at the DSS office in Abuja, he was not only questioned by DSS agents but also by police officers.

The police interrogation, Ajaero revealed, focused on his role in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests that took place in August. His detention sparked widespread criticism from labour unions, human rights groups, and civil society organizations.

The NLC had earlier condemned Ajaero’s arrest, issuing a firm ultimatum to the DSS to release him by midnight on Tuesday. The union warned that it would mobilize its affiliates, state councils, and civil society partners to take action if he was not released within the given timeframe.
