On Thursday, the Nigeria Police Force announced the arrest of 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye, suspected of the brutal murder of Idowu Christianah, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State.

Christianah was reportedly abducted along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos last August by Adeleye, who is a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), also located in Ogun State.

The case sparked outrage online, with social media users creating the hashtag #JusticeForChristianah on X (formerly Twitter) to demand the swift prosecution of Adeleye. Many users also speculated that Adeleye may have been involved in the deaths of his ex-girlfriend in 2018 and his biological sister in 2020, as both cases reportedly occurred under suspiciously similar circumstances.

In response to the public outcry, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement shared on X, alongside a photo of Adeleye in handcuffs.

Hundeyin stated that Adeleye was handed over to the police by the Nigerian Army on Thursday afternoon, and that an investigation is currently underway. “The 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to @LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade @HQNigerianArmy. The handover took place today, September 5, 2024, at about 1400hrs. Investigation is ongoing,” the police wrote.
