On Wednesday, September 11, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced an indefinite strike at Gombe State University (GSU). This decision was made after the union’s branch chairman, Suleiman Salihu, held a press conference to address ongoing welfare issues that remain unresolved.
Salihu explained that the strike was prompted by deteriorating teaching and learning conditions at the university. Despite numerous efforts to address these issues through various channels, no significant improvements have been achieved.
The union leader criticized the institution’s failure to implement the N30,000 minimum wage approved by the governor, noting that staff members are still receiving salaries based on the outdated 2012 salary scale. Furthermore, Salihu pointed out that the government has not honored the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA), which included a commitment to provide N50 million annually to the university.
He highlighted additional grievances, such as the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) for over five years, which has severely impacted the ability of GSU staff to perform their duties effectively.
