Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has harshly criticized the administration of Bola Tinubu for imposing severe punishments on peaceful protesters, even as terrorists continue to wreak havoc in Northern Nigeria.

Atiku pointed out that despite the ongoing violence in Yobe State, which has resulted in numerous deaths, and the destruction across villages in Katsina, Sokoto, and other areas of the North-West and North-Central regions, the government seems more focused on trivial matters. In a statement on Thursday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, he noted that the unrest is also affecting the South, with Boko Haram’s activities and political tensions threatening the country’s stability.

The former vice president expressed frustration that, amid these serious threats, the government is suppressing dissent by resorting to extreme measures like handing down death sentences to protesters. He emphasized that the massacre in Yobe highlights the failure of the current security structure and calls for urgent reform.

“My thoughts are with the victims of these brutal attacks,” Atiku said, urging the Tinubu administration to take stronger steps to protect lives and property throughout Nigeria.

SaharaReporters previously reported that terrorists attacked Mafa village in Yobe’s Tarmuwa Local Government Area, killing several residents. The heavily armed attackers also looted valuable goods and set multiple houses on fire.

This attack occurred just two days after terrorists killed three students at Faudiya School in Geidam Local Government Area, also in Yobe State.
