Aston Villa legend Gary Shaw has passed away at the age of 63 due to injuries from a fall at his home. The football community is in mourning, with Aston Villa expressing deep shock and sadness over his death.
Shaw made a significant impact at Aston Villa during the early 1980s. He was instrumental in the club’s triumphs, helping them secure the First Division title in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982. Throughout his time with Villa, he scored 79 goals in 213 appearances. His career also included spells with Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, Shrewsbury Town, and the England U21 team.
Aston Villa released a statement expressing their sorrow: “Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the passing of Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes. Gary was a talented striker who thrilled fans with his goals, contributing significantly to the club’s success in the 1980s. He was highly regarded and loved by supporters.”
Shaw, who passed away peacefully on September 16 surrounded by his family, was celebrated for his achievements, including winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1981 and being named the best Young Player in Europe in 1982. A knee injury in 1983 cut his career short, leading to his retirement in 1992 after playing in Denmark, Austria, and Hong Kong.
After retiring, Shaw worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador at Villa Park. He was admitted to the hospital last week following a head injury from his fall at home in Birmingham. The club’s thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
