The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns about the substance use of some candidates in the upcoming Edo State governorship election. According to a statement released on Wednesday in Benin by Kassim Afegbua, the APC Campaign Council’s director of media, there are allegations that several candidates are heavy users of banned substances, including marijuana and alcohol.

Afegbua called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to enforce mandatory drug tests for all candidates. He emphasized that this step is crucial to ensure that only candidates who are mentally and physically fit to lead are considered.

The APC director suggested that drug testing should specifically target the major party candidates to prevent potential embarrassment for the people of Edo State. He stressed the importance of voters making informed decisions and avoiding candidates who may misuse state resources for drug and alcohol-related activities.

Afegbua stated, “It has come to our attention that some candidates are reported to be significant consumers of banned substances. Conducting drug tests will help determine their mental fitness.”

He added that Edo State deserves leadership that upholds its values and does not bring disrepute to its people. Afegbua also reassured that their candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is ready to undergo any drug test as required.

“We expect the same commitment from the other candidates to confirm their fitness for office. Our council will continue to urge the NDLEA to implement these tests,” he concluded.
