Residents of Maiduguri, Borno State, are on high alert as flooding has overtaken several homes following the reported breakdown of the Alau Dam. The dam, which has been filled to capacity over the last week, is now causing significant concern.

In a statement released early Tuesday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, issued a strong warning. Titled “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents”, the announcement called for the immediate evacuation of people living in vulnerable areas.

“Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the riverbank to act swiftly to protect themselves and their property,” Prof. Tar stated. He also explained that the dam has broken through another channel, which is currently destroying farmland, with the water moving dangerously toward residential areas.

In addition, Tar emphasized the importance of following designated evacuation routes to ensure safe passage for those in affected regions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the last time a similar event occurred at the Alau Dam was in 1994, which led to widespread flooding, affecting almost half of Maiduguri.
