A tragic accident occurred on Friday evening in the Emene suburb of Enugu East local government area, Enugu State, claiming the lives of three people and leaving two others critically injured.

According to reports, the crash took place around 7 pm at Orie Emene Junction when a heavy-duty truck carrying laterite collided with a minibus. The minibus, which had seven passengers and a driver, was en route from Old Park to Emene. While some passengers managed to escape by jumping out, three were not as fortunate and were crushed to death. Two others were seriously injured and remain in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses at the scene expressed shock and confusion over the cause of the accident, especially since there were no signs of speeding or brake failure from the truck. Questions have been raised about the truck driver’s actions, with many speculating on what could have gone wrong.

One eyewitness, who identified himself as Okechi Michael, shared his thoughts on the incident: “It’s hard to believe what happened here this evening. This is a busy junction, and although the current administration removed the speed bumps put in place by the previous administration, the truck came from Adoration Road, which has some obstacles before reaching the junction.”

He further explained, “The truck crossed the railway line just before reaching the junction, so it wasn’t speeding, and it doesn’t seem like brake failure either. It had just crossed the rail line when it rammed into the bus.”

The truck driver has since been arrested by the police, but there are concerns about potential corruption. “I hope they don’t take bribes from the construction firm and let him go. This driver needs to be thoroughly investigated and charged, whether for manslaughter or first-degree murder. The three passengers he killed, along with the two critically injured, deserve justice,” Michael added.

An Air Force personnel involved in the rescue efforts also expressed his dismay, questioning what could have led the truck driver to cause such a devastating incident.
