A shocking stabbing attack in Solingen, Germany, left three people dead and four others seriously injured on Friday night. The incident occurred during a festival celebrating the town’s 650th anniversary, according to local police.

The attack unfolded around 10 PM local time (2000 GMT) when a lone, unidentified assailant attacked multiple individuals. The perpetrator remains at large, as reported by Reuters.

Solingen Mayor Tim-Oliver Kurzbach expressed his deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “It tears my heart apart that there was an attack on our city. I have tears in my eyes when I think of those we have lost.” He added, “I pray for all those who are still fighting for their lives.”

Incidents involving fatal stabbings and shootings are relatively rare in Germany. The police confirmed that the attack took place at the Fronhof, a market square where live bands were performing as part of the festival.

Herbert Reul, the interior minister for North Rhine-Westphalia, the state where Solingen is located, visited the scene. He described the incident as a targeted attack on human life but refrained from speculating on the motive behind the attack.

This tragic event follows a similar incident in June, where a 29-year-old policeman was fatally stabbed in Mannheim during an attack on a right-wing demonstration. Additionally, a stabbing attack on a train in 2021 resulted in several injuries.

In response to such incidents, the German government has been working to tighten regulations on the length of knives that can be legally carried in public.
