The Kano State government has revealed that documents critical to the corruption trial of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje were stolen during a recent protest that saw the State High Court overrun by invaders. The nationwide protest, which escalated into vandalism, targeted the court where Ganduje, along with his wife Hafsat, son Umar Abdullahi, and five others, were facing eight charges related to fund misappropriation and diversion during his tenure.

Daily Trust reports that the vandalized court was among several properties damaged and looted by hoodlums during the #EndBadGovernance protest. On Wednesday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf visited the court premises to assess the extent of the destruction.

Governor Yusuf was accompanied by key legal officials, including Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, Chief Registrar of the High Court Alhaji Abdullahi Ado Bayero, and several judges. During his visit, Yusuf condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act orchestrated to hinder ongoing corruption cases against Ganduje, who is also the acting National Chairman of the APC.

“It is regrettable that Kano’s enemies hired miscreants to vandalize a historic public building in an attempt to derail corruption charges against the former governor and his associates,” stated Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson. Tofa further noted that the damages included the theft of office equipment, destruction of offices, and the burning of vehicles, with losses estimated at over N1 billion.

Governor Yusuf urged the youth of Kano to avoid being manipulated by detractors into engaging in violence, encouraging them instead to focus on skill acquisition for a brighter future. He reassured the public that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property in the state.

Expressing sympathy, Yusuf commiserated with Chief Judge Dije Abdu Aboki and the judiciary over the incident, urging them to persevere in restoring court proceedings to ensure justice is served. He also praised Kano residents for their continued support of the current administration and prayed for sustained peace, stability, and prosperity in the state.
