The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been summoned by the Nigeria Police Force for questioning. The charges linked to this invitation include allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

In a statement released by Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, and obtained by Arise News on Monday evening, it was revealed that the invitation letter was signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence.

The letter, dated August 19, 2024, noted that Ajaero’s name surfaced in ongoing investigations related to the mentioned allegations. It instructed Ajaero to appear at the IRT Complex, Abattoir, near Guzape Junction, on Tuesday, August 20, at 10:00 AM. The letter also warned that failure to comply would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant against him.

The statement from the NLC further disclosed that SP Moshood had sent a personal message to Comrade Joe Ajaero, stating that the police had attempted to deliver the letter at the Labour House, but the premises were locked. This was found surprising since staff were reportedly present at the office beyond 6 PM.

The NLC also expressed concern that Ajaero was not addressed by his official title as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the letter. The statement suggested that the issue surrounding the raid on the NLC headquarters is far from over.

Prior to the raid, the Congress had urged the government to engage in dialogue with the organizers of a protest, clarifying that the NLC was not involved in the demonstration. The NLC had criticized the police for the high casualty rate during the protest and, in its NEC communiqué after the raid, condemned the actions of the police, demanding an apology from both the police and the government.

During a world press conference held last Thursday, the NLC warned that if anything were to happen to its leadership or any of its members, the police should be held responsible.
