
More than 20 medical and dental students, along with a House Officer, were abducted in Benue State while traveling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu.
The students, hailing from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos, were on a joint journey when they were attacked by gunmen around 5:30 pm in the Otukpo area of Benue State.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the students, with the Benue State Police Command confirming the abduction early on Friday. One of the victims has been identified as Dr. Louis, a House Officer.
A medical-related X account, @Nigerian_Doctor, shared the news online and called for urgent action from security agencies to ensure the students’ safe return and to alleviate the distress faced by their families.
The post read: “A House Officer (Dr. Louis) and over 20 medical and dental students have reportedly been kidnapped! These students, from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos, were on their way to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu. Their last known location was near Otukpo in Benue State.”
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the kidnapping and stated that an investigation into the incident has already begun. “Yes, the report of kidnapping is true. The report was received around 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and an investigation is ongoing,” she said.
