Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) and other prominent Nigerian political figures, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are currently in Chicago to attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Their participation comes as special guests of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.

Among the notable Nigerian invitees is former Senate President Ken Nnamani. The U.S.-based NDI also extended an invitation to the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, though it remains unclear if he has accepted.

The NDI, known for its commitment to promoting democratic values worldwide, operates out of the United States. Osinbajo’s presence at this event is seen as a testament to his growing global influence and political engagement since leaving office in May 2023.

The participation of these distinguished Nigerians at the Democratic National Convention highlights the crucial role African leaders play in advancing global democratic values. Their involvement signals a dedication to engaging with various political processes and learning from international experiences to enhance democracy in Nigeria.

The Democratic National Convention is a key event in the U.S. political landscape, where the Democratic Party outlines key policies and formally nominates its presidential candidate, including the current U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris.

This convention also serves as a platform for global leaders and stakeholders to engage in discussions that may shape international political dynamics. Since its establishment in 1983, NDI has been instrumental in supporting and strengthening democratic institutions globally.

Operating in over 50 countries, NDI focuses on promoting citizen participation, transparency, and accountability in governance. It provides technical support to political parties, civic groups, and election processes, emphasizing the protection of human rights and upholding democratic norms.

By attending this convention, Osinbajo and the other Nigerian leaders aim to engage with global democratic practices, exchange ideas with international peers, and bring valuable insights back to Nigeria. Their involvement underscores Nigeria’s active participation in the global democratic community.
