Omoyele Sowore, the human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, has urged Nigerians to join the ongoing hunger protest by making noise with their pots and pans. Sowore, who ran as a presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 elections, called on those staying home to support the protest against hunger and poor governance by banging their kitchenware in the streets.
“We urge everyone to join the protest from their homes by banging pots and pans to voice their discontent with hunger, poverty, and starvation,” Sowore stated in a post on X social media platform on Friday. “Take them to the streets and make your voices heard.”
Sowore also expressed gratitude to the participants of the protest and emphasized the importance of daily activities like barricades, marches, rallies, and public meetings across the country. “Thank you all for your commitment over the past 24 hours since the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement resumed,” he said. “We must intensify our efforts with daily barricades, marches, rallies, and people’s congresses. Revolutions are ‘the festivals of the oppressed and the exploited!'”
According to SaharaReporters, the protests began in major cities across Nigeria on August 1, kicking off a planned 10-day demonstration. The protests aim to highlight the hardships and challenges faced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with citizens voicing their concerns about economic difficulties, soaring inflation, poor governance, and widespread insecurity.
Despite the peaceful intent of the protests, there have been reports of police brutality, with several journalists and media professionals facing arrest, assault, harassment, and obstruction while covering the events.
