On Friday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo issued a stern warning to the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government, emphasizing the risks of disregarding the demands behind the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

Obasanjo delivered this caution during a meeting with six National Assembly members at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He stressed the importance of the Federal Government addressing the grievances that have sparked widespread protests across the country, noting that the demands are legitimate.

The former President highlighted the potential for serious consequences if these issues are not promptly and effectively addressed. The six legislators present at the meeting are co-sponsors of a bill advocating for a single six-year presidential term with a rotational presidency between the North and South.

Obasanjo urged the government to take the concerns of the youth seriously, pointing out that their frustration is largely driven by poverty, unemployment, and a sense of being unheard. He underscored that the nation’s progress is contingent upon collective efforts and a shift in the mindset of those in power.

Rather than focusing on the duration of presidential terms, Obasanjo argued that the priority should be on changing the mentality of leadership. He added that regardless of whether Nigeria adopts a single six-year term or retains the current system, the success of governance ultimately depends on trust in institutions and leadership.
