The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed its growing frustration with the lack of clear communication regarding efforts to rescue Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted from the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State. Despite the expiration of a two-week deadline, there has been little to no progress in her release.

In a virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, August 11, 2024, NARD’s leadership highlighted the ambiguous status of the situation. The council noted in a communique, “The NEC noted the unclear status of progress regarding the release of our abducted colleague.”

The NEC further pointed out that while there have been reports of some actions being taken, no concrete information or assurances have been provided by the security agencies. The ongoing lack of updates has led NARD to prepare for decisive action in response.

As part of their response, the NEC has mandated each local chapter to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) this week. These meetings will focus on addressing the situation and deciding on a unified course of action. Following these discussions, NARD members are set to organize demonstration marches within hospital premises to draw attention to the issue and express their dissatisfaction.

A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14, 2024, during which NARD will address the ongoing abduction and announce plans for hospital demonstrations across all centers. Additionally, the NEC has extended its ultimatum by two weeks, giving the government and security agencies additional time to act. NARD has warned that if no substantial progress is made, they will proceed with a nationwide strike.
