On Wednesday, August 21, a tragic incident occurred in the Barikin Sale area of Minna, Niger State, where a Nigerian policeman fatally shot Mal Gimba, a motorcycle rider. The shooting happened during an attempt by the police to break up a violent confrontation among local youths.

The altercation escalated when a police team from Morris Police Station arrived to restore order. According to a family source, the situation took a deadly turn when one of the officers accidentally shot Gimba in the leg after the youths began pelting the police van with stones.

As the police continued to pursue the youths, another officer on a motorcycle discharged his firearm, and a stray bullet struck Gimba. Despite being injured and severely bleeding, Gimba was placed in the police vehicle as the chase persisted.

SaharaReporters was informed that Gimba was initially taken to a police clinic in Minna, where his condition deteriorated. He was later moved to a traditional healer, but the injury had caused a broken bone and significant blood loss, leading to his death.

A family source revealed that since Gimba’s death, the police have only visited the family once to express their condolences. Gimba, who was an Islamic teacher, is survived by his wife and three children.

When contacted on Thursday, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Wasiu Abiodun stated that he needed more time to confirm the incident. However, as of the time this report was filed, no further updates or statements have been provided by the police, despite earlier assurances.
