The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently discovered an alleged illegal alcohol production facility in Lagos Island. The discovery followed a detailed surveillance operation, which led to the identification of makeshift factories scattered across various packing stores and rooms within the Oke-Arin market.
According to reports, these improvised factories were used to produce, package, and distribute multiple brands of alcoholic beverages directly within the market. During a raid on the premises, NAFDAC officers confiscated over 2,000 cartons of empty bottles, already packaged drinks, and a range of equipment, including a small plastic mixing tank, a makeshift filter, and packaging materials.
Three individuals were arrested in connection with the operation. NAFDAC officials estimate the value of the seized goods at N200 million. The agency has called on the public to remain vigilant, especially when purchasing alcoholic drinks, to avoid unknowingly consuming products from such illegal operations.
NAFDAC also confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be prosecuted once the investigation is complete.
