The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that it has granted six states the authority to oversee their own electricity markets. The states—Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo, and Edo—will now manage their electricity sectors independently.
According to a statement released on X, these states have established their own regulatory agencies to handle local electricity market oversight. NERC’s official order specifies the transfer of regulatory duties from NERC to the States Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs).
The statement details: “This regulatory instrument, known as the Order of Transfer of Regulatory Oversight, designates the transition of regulatory powers from NERC to the SERCs in the states of Oyo, Enugu, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Ekiti.”
The move aims to enhance local oversight and efficiency within the electricity markets of these states.
