A senior Boko Haram Deputy Commander, identified as Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, has surrendered to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) troops. The surrender occurred in Cross Kauwa, a region within the Lake Chad area known for its insurgency activities.

Keremi, who was a prominent aide to a notorious Boko Haram leader, voluntarily turned himself in. This development was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Chief Military Information Officer at MNJTF HQ in N’Djamena, Chad.

In his confession, Keremi detailed his involvement in various terrorist activities, particularly along the Monguno-Baga axis, a hotspot for intense conflict between Boko Haram and Nigerian forces. “Keremi’s surrender provides valuable insights into the group’s operations,” Osoba noted.

Additionally, the MNJTF welcomed Babagoni Modu and a family of eight who escaped from a Boko Haram camp in Marte. Modu, a former member of the group, cited his disillusionment with their violent tactics as his reason for fleeing. The family, which includes two women, four men, and two children, shared their traumatic experiences before their escape.

In response to these developments, the MNJTF distributed placards encouraging other terrorists to surrender. The troops also detected and safely detonated multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Cross Kauwa, averting potential harm to civilians and infrastructure. This action underscores the MNJTF’s vigilance and effectiveness in combating Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

Osoba emphasized that these achievements reflect the MNJTF’s dedication to fighting terrorism and ensuring safety in the Lake Chad region. The surrender of a high-ranking Boko Haram figure and the successful neutralization of explosive threats mark significant progress in the ongoing anti-terrorism efforts.
