Residents of Yauri Local Government Area in Kebbi State are voicing their frustrations as they continue to purchase contaminated water for N60 per 25-liter gallon, despite suffering from waterborne diseases for over three decades.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, these residents have been battling various waterborne illnesses due to the contaminated water they rely on for drinking and other domestic activities. The issue has persisted for more than 30 years, with little to no intervention from the government.

Mallam Jabir, a resident of the area, spoke to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, expressing his concerns over the dire situation. “I grew up here. This is my home, and we’ve been enduring this problem for the past 30 years. The government is aware, everyone knows about this issue, but nothing has been done,” Jabir lamented.

He added, “As far as I know, Yauri is the only local government area facing such a problem.”

In response to the ongoing neglect, residents of Kebbi South Senatorial District and Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency recently petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They demanded the recall of their National Assembly representatives, Senator Garba Musa Maidoki and Hon. Garba Umar Uba, citing poor performance and neglect of their duties.

The petition, dated August 7, 2024, was addressed to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and was signed by over 90 voters from Yauri Local Government Area.

The constituents pointed out that their petition aligns with sections 69 and 110 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). They expressed deep disappointment in their representatives, stating that despite being elected to advocate for their interests, both Maidoki and Umar Uba have failed to address their needs and concerns.

The residents emphasized that they are suffering from severe neglect, enduring harsh conditions that include bad roads, dilapidated schools, inadequate health facilities, and displacements caused by widespread insecurity.
