In a tragic incident, gunmen stormed a police checkpoint near the Nnobi Police Station along the Nnobi/Nkpor Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack, which took place on Friday, resulted in the death of a police officer who was reportedly the driver of one of the police vehicles stationed at the checkpoint.

A local source disclosed that the assailants had infiltrated the community prior to the attack. They allegedly stayed in a house close to the checkpoint, forcibly gaining entry by breaking a wall. Once inside, they compelled the residents to open the gate, allowing them to drive their vehicles into the compound. The attackers also seized the residents’ mobile phones and confined them to a room, warning them not to raise the alarm under threat of being shot.

This attack comes just weeks after a similar incident in the state. About three weeks ago, gunmen targeted another police checkpoint on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area. During that attack, another police officer was killed, and the assailants used explosives as part of their assault.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the recent attack and the loss of the officer. He noted that operations are currently ongoing in the area as directed by the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam. Tochukwu stated, “It is true. One policeman was killed, and there is an operation going on in that area now, which the Commissioner of Police has ordered.”

He further emphasized the sacrifices made by security personnel, stating, “This is a pure example of the highest price a security officer pays in discharging their duty. They were at the checkpoint monitoring the area before they came under attack by the gunmen.”

Further details are expected as the ongoing operation continues.
