
Tragedy struck in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as five people lost their lives when a canoe capsized. The incident occurred on Tuesday as the group attempted to cross a flood-submerged road.
The victims, identified as Lurwanu Adamu, Idris Abubakar, Fiddausi Dahiru, Ramla Nura, and Usman Adamu, were all residents of Malamawar Gangare in Birnin Kudu LGA.
According to DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, the canoe overturned, instantly drowning all five passengers. The accident happened on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, around noon. Reports indicated that the canoe was navigating a road in Gantsa town that had been heavily affected by flooding when it capsized.
Upon receiving the report, a team of police officers, along with local divers, quickly responded to the scene in an effort to rescue the victims. Unfortunately, by the time they were pulled from the water and taken to Gantsa Cottage Hospital, the attending doctor confirmed that all five had already passed away. Their bodies have since been released to their families for burial.
