In the early hours of Friday, a fire broke out at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters located on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road, in the Ogba area of Lagos. The fire, which started around 2:20 a.m., heavily damaged a section of the two-story building, specifically targeting one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5, Block 21. The building is a three-story structure consisting of 16 two-bedroom flats.

Initial findings from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) suggest that the fire was triggered by an electrical surge in the children’s room of the affected apartment. The blaze, which completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, resulted in the loss of properties valued at millions of naira.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident and highlighted the quick response from the Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Their coordinated efforts ensured that the fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.

“Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries in this incident,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu stated. He also mentioned that the team took the opportunity to educate the victims and other residents on the safe use of electrical appliances to prevent similar incidents in the future.

By 5:00 a.m., teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the Nigerian Police were still at the scene to ensure the situation was fully under control.
