The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, has died after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
According to a family source, Ayilara passed away on Thursday morning. The source shared the news with The Nation Newspaper, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend, brother, and family member, Commissioner Waheed Ayilara.”
This news has been confirmed by a senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State. However, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
Ayilara, who previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, succeeded AIG Idowu Owohunwa. He was appointed to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun in February 2024.
