Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly fled Dhaka amid escalating protests demanding her resignation. The unrest has led to widespread demonstrations across the capital, with protesters storming her official residence, Ganabhaban.
Despite efforts by security forces to contain the situation using armored vehicles and barbed wire, the protests have overwhelmed these barriers, leading to a significant confrontation.
The unrest, initially sparked by grievances over civil service job quotas, has evolved into a broader anti-government movement calling for Hasina’s resignation. The violence has been severe, with 98 deaths reported on Sunday, raising the total death toll since the protests began to over 300.
Hasina’s son has urged security forces to prevent any takeover, while a senior advisor has indicated that her resignation remains a possibility. The army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, is expected to address the nation in response to the crisis. The protests have drawn widespread support from various sectors of society, including celebrities, who have used social media to amplify their calls for change.
