Amnesty International has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to establish an independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the fatal shooting of at least 10 protesters in Kurna and Kofar Nasarawa during the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The protests, demanding economic reforms and the reinstatement of fuel subsidies, were marred by violence, with reports of security agencies’ misconduct and disruptions caused by alleged hired thugs.
In its statement, Amnesty International stressed the need for a thorough and public investigation into both the conduct of security agencies and the role of these thugs. The organization emphasized that without such an inquiry, Nigeria risks further entrenching a culture of impunity and undermining the rule of law. Amnesty also called for protection for victims, their families, and witnesses to ensure they can testify without fear of harassment or reprisal.
