The government of Ondo State has issued a directive aimed at “minor chiefs,” prohibiting them from wearing beaded crowns. Amidu Takuro, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, emphasized during a press briefing in Akure that this directive reinforces existing laws in the state. According to Takuro, only traditional rulers (obas) are authorized to wear beaded crowns, and any minor chief found contravening this rule could face legal consequences, including imprisonment for up to three years.

Takuro highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity and importance of the traditional institution, responding to complaints from various communities. He reiterated the necessity for all communities in the state to possess Chieftaincy Declaration documents.

Addressing another issue, Takuro discussed the recent nullification of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) by the Ondo High Court. Despite this legal setback, he expressed the government’s determination to maintain and sustain the LCDAs, which were initiated during the tenure of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Takuro assured, is committed to upholding this legacy.

Furthermore, Takuro assured the public of imminent local government elections in Ondo State. He emphasized the government’s efforts to employ alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to address grievances and ensure alignment among all parties involved in the LCDAs issue.
