A coalition of women’s groups, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Young Women (NYW), has accused Mrs. Tinu A. Abiola, wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, and other leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deceiving over 400 women with a promise of palliative rice, only to photograph them holding “Say No To Protest” banners.

The groups claim that Mrs. Abiola and her chief mobiliser, Comfort Shekwoyan of Women for Peace Security and Social Initiative, lured various women’s organizations to mobilize 50 women each to the Eagle’s Square under the pretense of distributing 50kg bags of rice. Instead, the women, numbering more than 400, were given banners with anti-protest slogans and left stranded without transport fare.

In a statement issued by NYW President Ambassador Ojineme Enakeme, the group expressed deep disappointment, betrayal, and outrage at the deceitful actions. The statement read:

“On July 27, 2024, Mrs. Abiola and Comfort Shekwoyan organized an event at the Eagle Square in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), claiming it was a palliative distribution exercise for vulnerable women. However, it turned out to be a political gathering designed to promote APC interests and undermine legitimate protests against government failures.

“The women who attended were coerced into holding banners and chanting slogans against protests, without their knowledge or consent. This exploitation of vulnerable women, who are already struggling, is a disgrace and a betrayal of those genuinely fighting for a better future free from corruption and inequality.

“We condemn these deceitful actions and demand accountability and transparency. The government’s corruption and incompetence have led to widespread suffering. We call for:

  • A public apology from Mrs. Abiola and Comfort Shekwoyan.
  • An investigation into Women for Peace Security and Social Initiative to ensure they are not using deceitful tactics.
  • Government responsibility to address Nigerians’ grievances and improve conditions for vulnerable women.
  • Measures to prevent political exploitation of vulnerable groups.

“We will continue to fight for a better Nigeria where every citizen has access to basic necessities and will not be deterred by deceitful tactics. We urge all Nigerians to join in nationwide protests against corruption, bad governance, and exploitation. Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and future generations. #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.”
