The Olympic Games are set to take place in the French capital, with venues designated for all 32 sporting disciplines. Many of these locations were already in existence before the Games, with the only new permanent facility being the Aquatics Center, which will host artistic swimming, water polo, and diving. Additionally, there will be various temporary arenas and stands constructed around famous landmarks.

Most events will be held in Paris, within a five-kilometer radius of the Olympic Village in the city’s north. This compact setup allows fans to easily walk, cycle, or use Paris’ metro system to navigate between venues. Some events will occur outside Paris, but the city will still serve as the central hub.

In a groundbreaking move, the Opening Ceremony will take place along the Seine River, making it the first time the event won’t be held inside a stadium. The Parade of Nations will feature athletes on boats, traveling through the heart of the city.

Iconic Locations

Paris 2024 organizers have chosen several notable city landmarks for events. Beach volleyball will be hosted in a new open-air stadium next to the Eiffel Tower. The Palace of Versailles, once a royal residence, will now host equestrian and modern pentathlon events. The Esplanade des Invalides, a vast green space, will serve as the archery venue and the marathon finish line. This location is adjacent to the Hôtel des Invalides, which includes museums, monuments, and Napoleon Bonaparte’s tomb.

The Place de la Concorde will be transformed into a hub for urban sports like breaking, 3×3 basketball, skateboarding, and freestyle BMX. The aim is to integrate these sports into the city’s natural environment, away from traditional stadiums.

Permanent Venues

Paris boasts several permanent sports venues that will be utilized for the Olympics. The Stade de France, which hosts the national soccer and rugby teams, will serve as the Olympic Stadium, accommodating track and field events and rugby sevens. Nearby, the Stade Roland Garros, famous for its clay tennis courts used in the French Open, will host Olympic tennis and boxing matches.

Soccer matches will be played across seven different stadiums in France, including the Parc des Princes in Paris, home to Paris Saint-Germain and a frequent host of international matches.

Events Beyond Paris

While most events will be concentrated in Paris, some sports will take place elsewhere. Surfing will be held in Tahiti, over 9,000 miles away in French Polynesia, where surfers will tackle the famous Teahupo’o wave. Sailing events will be in Marseille, on France’s southern coast, providing ideal conditions for competitors. Marseille will also host soccer matches along with venues in Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Lyon, Nantes, and Nice.
