In a horrifying incident on Monday, a gunman opened fire at an elderly care home in Croatia, resulting in the deaths of five people, as reported by the nation’s public broadcaster.

The attacker entered a private care facility in Daruvar, located approximately 75 miles east of Zagreb, and began shooting at the residents, according to Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). Five individuals were killed on the spot, and the exact number of injured remains unclear. State news agency HINA mentioned that some of the injured are currently receiving medical treatment.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended later near a café, HINA reported. The investigation is still in progress, and police have yet to release further information, HRT added.

“We are appalled by the murder of five people in the home for the elderly,” stated Croatia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on social media. “We express our condolences to the families of the victims and hope for the recovery of the wounded. I expect the competent authorities to determine all the circumstances of this terrible crime,” Plenković said.

Prime Minister Plenković also mentioned that Deputy Prime Minister Davor Božinović, Health Minister Vili Beroš, and Social Policy Minister Marin Piletić are on their way to Daruvar.
