With the #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled to begin on August 1, the Nigerian government is increasingly concerned about its inability to identify the organizers behind the movement.

Despite intensified efforts to uncover the leaders of the protest, which is gaining widespread support due to economic hardship, fuel subsidy reversals, corruption, and government mismanagement, the government remains unsure about the individuals orchestrating the demonstrations.

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Thursday expressed concern over the anonymous nature of the protest organizers. He described the situation as unusual and called for the identities of those behind the protest to be revealed.

Matawalle stated, “The persons behind the protest, the sponsors and their facilitators are unknown. It is strange and ominous that they are unidentified.” He emphasized that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, violence and destruction are not permitted under the law.

He further warned against mimicking Kenya’s experience, advising those seeking to replicate such scenarios in Nigeria to reconsider, as it could hinder progress. Matawalle called for collective responsibility to maintain national peace and unity, urging Nigerians to reject actions that could lead to instability.

President Bola Tinubu, during a meeting with new U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., acknowledged the importance of protests in democracy. However, he emphasized that the government will not tolerate demonstrations that result in loss of lives and property. Tinubu highlighted his personal experience with peaceful protests during the fight for democracy, reaffirming his commitment to upholding democratic norms and ensuring that demonstrations do not lead to destruction.
