President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Keir Starmer, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party.
In a statement released on Friday by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Tinubu expressed his admiration for Starmer’s determination and courage. Tinubu, reflecting on his own experience as a former opposition leader in Nigeria, noted the significance of Starmer’s journey through opposition and leadership within the Labour Party. He highlighted the party’s success in reforming, mobilizing, and positioning itself for victory after 14 years, attributing this to Starmer’s leadership qualities.
Tinubu remarked, “President Tinubu also congratulates the citizens and the government of the United Kingdom, describing the Kingdom as an abiding model of democracy and Nigeria’s long-standing partner.” He further emphasized his eagerness to enhance the relationship between Nigeria and the UK, focusing on mutual interests, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering a safer and more prosperous future for both nations.
Earlier reports from SaharaReporters detailed how Keir Starmer ascended to the role of UK Prime Minister following his party’s defeat of the Conservative Party, ending its 14-year rule.
Rishi Sunak, the previous Prime Minister from the Conservative Party, resigned on Friday after meeting with the monarch. In his resignation speech, Sunak announced his decision to step down as Conservative Party leader, though not immediately. Starmer has pledged to bring about a new era of change in Britain, signaling a shift after the long Conservative governance.
