Three police officers and two accomplices have been arrested for kidnapping and robbing motorists in Enugu State. These individuals were found to be setting up illegal roadblocks, posing as members of the Nigerian Army and Police, to prey on innocent drivers and passengers.
The detained officers identified themselves as Inspector Tache Egbe, serving in Anambra State, Inspector James Mamah from Obosi, Anambra State, and an officer named Odumodu from the same state. The other two suspects, John and Onyeka Onyeza, were commercial drivers known for transporting illegal oil.
It was discovered that the policemen had been escorting oil bunkerers from Anambra State to Obollo-Afor in Enugu State. On their return journey, they intercepted a fuel tanker driven by a Hausa man. Claiming to be part of the IGP Petroleum Squad, they blocked the tanker and pretended to take the driver to their office. Instead, they diverted to Ohodo town in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Enugu State, where they tied the driver’s hands and legs and left him in a bush.
The suspects then drove the tanker to a petrol station in Obollo-Afor, where they unloaded the fuel. They later abandoned the tanker in a Benue State community. Their luck ran out when they returned to Obollo-Afor to fortify themselves at a herbalist’s shrine. A police team from the Obollo-Afor Division, tipped off about their activities, arrested them with the help of the Neighbourhood Watch of Amalla-Egazi, a community in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Upon their arrest, authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles, one Beretta pistol, four fully loaded magazines, various charms, phones, Nigerian Army and Police uniforms, and outdated identity cards from the suspects. These individuals had been regularly mounting roadblocks to terrorize and rob motorists and other road users.
