The Take-It-Back Movement, a pro-democracy group, has officially informed the Inspector-General of Police about its plans to hold public meetings, rallies, and processions in collaboration with other patriotic Nigerians and organizations.

In a letter dated July 26, 2024, and received by the Inspector-General’s office the same day, the group, represented by its lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, requested police coverage for the events to ensure their peaceful execution.

The letter cites sections 39 and 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and section 83 of the Police Act, 2020, which mandates the police to maintain and secure public safety and order. The letter highlights the police’s responsibility to uphold constitutional provisions, protect fundamental rights, and ensure fairness regardless of individuals’ economic status, religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs.

The planned events are scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024, or potentially later, at Eagle Square in Abuja, public spaces in the capital cities of all 36 states, and the headquarters of the 774 local government councils. These gatherings will start at 8 am and continue uninterrupted until their conclusion, possibly extending to public highways and other areas of public access.

Adegboruwa’s letter requests details of any police officers or teams assigned to cover the events to coordinate plans and strategies. It also expresses gratitude for the Inspector-General’s consideration and support, inviting further contact for additional information or inquiries.
