Police authorities in Bangladesh have confirmed that more than 500 people, including some opposition leaders, have been arrested in Dhaka following days of violence sparked by nationwide protests against the government’s job quota announcements.

According to AFP, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Faruk Hossain stated, “At least 532 people have been arrested over the violence.” Among those arrested are some leaders of the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP).

Last week, at least 39 people were killed during clashes between protesters and police and soldiers deployed by the government. In a partial victory for the protesters, Bangladesh’s top court has since scaled back the controversial job-quota system.

Despite this concession, student leaders have pledged to continue their protests until all those arrested are released and the officials responsible for the crackdown resign. They have called for a nationwide shutdown on Monday.

In response to the unrest, soldiers are patrolling cities, an indefinite curfew has been imposed, and a communications blackout is severely restricting information flow. Although the official death toll from the violence is unclear, reports suggest that more than 100 people, mostly protesters, have been killed. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has condemned opposition politicians for “creating anarchy,” with at least 70 BNP leaders arrested.

As the situation deteriorates, Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens against traveling to Bangladesh. The ministry cited the death toll and communications blackout, advising those in Bangladesh to adhere to the curfew and stock up on supplies. It also recommended avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs reported that about 4,500 Indian nationals have returned home after fleeing the violence in Bangladesh. The ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure a smooth passage for citizens at land ports and airports. Additionally, 500 students from Nepal, 38 from Bhutan, and one from the Maldives have also arrived in India. The High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are in regular contact with local authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals.
