Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has issued a stern warning to the organizers of the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining peace and order, cautioning against any violent actions by individuals or groups during the protest.
This warning stems from intelligence reports indicating that criminal elements plan to infiltrate and hijack the protest to cause chaos and harm law-abiding citizens and property in the state. Similar to the “EndSARS” protests, these hoodlums intend to attack people, destroy both public and private property, and engage in looting.
CP Uzuegbu advised the organizers to either cancel the planned protest or strictly follow the law by obtaining the necessary approvals before proceeding. He assured the public of the police’s and other security forces’ commitment to decisively handle any criminal activities that may arise.
While recognizing the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully assemble and express their grievances, CP Uzuegbu stressed that the police would not tolerate any assembly or protest being hijacked and turned violent, particularly in these challenging times.
The CP urged those planning the protest in Enugu State to reconsider their plans, given the intelligence reports, and to seek alternative peaceful methods to voice their concerns. He emphasized that if the protest goes ahead, it must comply with the Public Order Act, including submitting an application detailing the leaders, date, time, place of takeoff, and duration of the exercise, which will be subject to thorough assessment and approval.
Residents of Enugu State are encouraged to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and promptly report any criminal activity to the nearest police station, particularly those who may attempt to exploit the protest to cause harm.
